Nintendo Revolution renamed to Wii

nintendowii.jpgThe new video game console from Nintendo has been named Wii, as in “we.” Gamasutra has a good bit of info, in particular, the announcement that Wii will be able to read GameCube discs.

More info will be revealed at next month’s E3 in Los Angeles. There Nintendo has promised to reveal the last secret hiding within the Wii.

Game on? Game off

MLGlogo.pngAs Kendal mentioned in a link, the MLG has inked a deal with the USA Network to televise seven one-hour episodes.

I’m not quite sure what to think. Part of me is excited that perhaps gaming will be taken seriously. Another part says “hey, this will just bring ridicule. One of the guys to be featured said, and I quote, “It’s an extreme sport. It’s about quick reflexes and also outsmarting people.”

I’m sorry, I just don’t find it to be extreme. Other than your arms moving, and perhaps your legs if you’re playing Dance Dance Revolution, you’re pretty immobile. A sport is defined as something that involves physical exertion. I don’t see how he can compare a game to snowboarding or something similar. However, I digress.

I’m just afraid I’ll see uncouth teens with greasy hair and nasally voices trash-talking about how they schooled some noob the other night in a rousing game of Counter-Strike or something to that effect.

I’m not against organized gaming by any means. I fully support competitions and tournaments like the one held annually at QuakeCon. But I don’t know if it’ll be taken seriously on TV.

I hope this doesn’t turn out as badly as when ESPN did broadcasts of tournament for Magic: The Gathering.

Getting paid to play

I suspect resident gaming expert Chris Valdez will have more to say about this, but I thought I’d offer this advice: Figure out which company is going to begin producing thumb-steroids and invest heavily, before the feds come down on them.

Easter treats

I must admit, I kind of freaked when I first saw the chocolate cross. This is a much more appropriate treat.

DeLay’s defender

We here at the Buzz like to keep things light. We consider this blog thingamajig a sort of cyber-party conversation - that means lots of silly, frivolous stuff and no politics or religious arguments. We have to mention this, though, because it’s not everyday an East Texan gets into a comic strip that’s distributed nationwide. You can learn more about Rick Scarborough here.

Most excellent - and ode to the ’80s

I was born in the ’80s, but I don’t really remember much of the time. That’s why when I watch a movie like “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” I love getting glimpses at what the era was like.

Words like triumphant, bodacious, righteous and many others heard in the film have fallen out of today’s lexicon, or so it seems, and that, my friends, is bogus.

I miss the days of mullets, MacGyver, A-Team and more. I miss bands like NKOTB, Menudo, and good pre-crazy Michael Jackson. I miss my 8-bit Nintendo staying up for hours on end playing the latest in pixely gaming goodness. I miss movies such as “The Goonies,” “Never Ending Story,” and “Labyrinth.” I miss the ’80s.

So the drummer for one tribute band jumps ship to start his own band, and the leader for the first band may or may not have tried to sneak into Vegas’ Hard Rock to confront him about it. Little people, big beef.

Real World in Colorado

It seems our earlier post about the Real World was an April Fool’s joke (just as we suspected). The real deal is going down in Denver. I still think they should consider “The Real World: Garner Street Compound” or something like that.

Snakes… on a plane?

I’m not sure if everyone’s heard about it, but there’s a movie coming out this year that will take the world by storm. It takes place on a plane. It stars Samuel L. Jackson.

It involves snakes. Here’s the trailer.

Snakes on a Plane — no, I’m not making that up — is set to come out Aug. 18. I don’t know how people in Hollywood come up with ideas like this and think they’ll succeed. My complaint is Hollywood seems to be in love with sequels and franchises these days, so its usually hesistant to embark on something new.

But the times it does, it makes movies like

this
. I don’t see how this will succeed. I don’t even know what the plot is other than some CGI snakes get loose on a plane. I’m sure SLJ will play his usual self and kill things.

Sorry if I’m bitter, but these types of offerings from Hollywood just make me sad.

Punk’s not dead

clash.jpg This “bloke” from “England” was pulled off a plane recently and questioned under the “Terrorism Act,” not because his name, Harraj Mann, sounds vaguely terrifying (that would be profiling, and profiling is wrong) but because his cabbie didn’t like his choice of music. Although the driver seemed to like Procul Harum’s “Whiter Shade of Pale,” Mann suspects it might have been Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” (do yourself a favor and click that) or The Clash’s “London Calling” that sent the poor sap into a fit.

Webcomics

pennyarcade-logo.pngComics that are created for publication on the web. A webcomic. They’re quite popular, and keep getting more popular as time goes on. They’re not all like the typical Marvel/DC superhero fare though. No, they cover all types of issues/topics ranging from video games, to elves, to pop culture.

Penny Arcade (www.penny-arcade.com) received a little mention back in our December issue of Buzz for its Child’s Play charity. Arguably one of the most popular webcomics around, it focuses around the lives of two gamers, Tycho and Gabe. While it focuses on video games, I assure you there is at least one comic in the archive that anyone can enjoy.

The artwork has evolved over the years, and the popularity of the comic has landed the two-man team behind the comic a book publishing deal with Dark Horse Comics, its own annual convention called PAX (Penny Arcade Expo), the Child’s Play charity that raised more than $605,000 in its third year, and much more.

Head on over and check it out.
