On the road again

This weekend I’m packing my bags and heading to Galveston. It’s going to be great. And, if you’re like me, and want to get away but stay relatively close, here are a few places I suggest.

• Woodville — There are two museums here that I thought sounded intriguing, Heritage Village and Allan Shivers Library and Museum. If you go to Heritage Village, be sure to check out the Pickett House Restaurant, which serves up an array of homemade favorites. If you’re in the mood for the festival scene, look no further than this cozy, East Texas town. This weekend the annual dogwood festival is going on.

•Crockett — Porterdavis will be playing Saturday at the Camp Street Cafe and Store. The Austin-based band is a blues/ roots trio that — from hearing a sample of their music on MySpace — should not be missed. The Warfield House and Quilt Center looks to be a great place to stay if you decide to go down. The bed and breakfast is near downtown, and even has a pool.

• Jefferson — One day I will visit here, because this place seems too amazing to pass up. Not only is it home to the “Gone With the Wind” museum, but it also has a wide array of historic hotels such as The Exclesior House and The Jefferson Hotel.

La nouvelle vague

Recently, thanks to a friend, I became officially captivated with la nouvelle vague — the new wave. My introduction to this French film genre came by way of Jean-Luc Godard and his fabulous film “Breathless.” As the only period film I’ve seen — “Le Mepris” is en route via NetFlix — “Breathless” provided a cinematic transport to a time and place that I would’ve never otherwise known. The je m’en fou attitude by chain-smoking actors, paired with Paris’ beautiful architecture and the guttural sound of the French language, is intoxicating, to say the least. Take a look.

Boys gone wild

Ok, so apparently there was a group of people who were protesting the presence of “Girls Gone Wild” last night at the Anex, and it resulted in one arrest. I know what most of y’all are thinking, “What’s the girl’s name.” But, according to arrest logs, it wasn’t a girl at all, but a guy. Hmm. According to the police report, the 24-year-old male tore down the “Girls Gone Wild” banner and was escorted out by police. When he tried to reenter, he was arrested. Quel dommage! Who knows what else he would have done had he come back in.

Tonight’s the big night

Tonight is the big night for crazy girls in deep East Texas. Girls Gone Wild — the well-known franchise video — is shooting another installment of its boob-showing bonanza at 8 p.m. at Bullfrogs. While there is no way I would attend, I have decided to send a photographer to capture the turnout. I can only imagine what type of girls, and more importantly, guys, will attend this event. For those of you, who are just as interested as I am, you have two options A) go tonight B) pick up a copy of next month’s Buzz. I recommend the latter.

Paris Hilton could be your BFF

Paris Hilton is teaming up with MTV for a new reality series tentatively titled “Paris Hilton’s My New BFF.” Can you guess what the show is about? According to AP, 20 contestants will live together in a house and try to prove themselves worthy in the areas of loyalty, endurance and “girl politics.” Hmmm. One word comes to mind — drama. But then, again that’s why reality TV is popular. For those who want to be on the show, you still have a chance. An eight-week casting call kicked off on ParisBFF.com, and surprisingly the range of individuals currently on there is quite diverse. Not what I expected. The site is filled with casting videos, profiles and blogs. Enough stuff that as a visitor on the site, you’ll be entertained for a mere seconds.

The vitality of youth

The last time I played softball, I was 13. From what I remember, the game was pretty simple: hit the ball, then run. However, 13 years later, during a casual adult softball game, I realize that what was true in my youth will not always be applicable as an adult. Not only did I have problems with pretty much every aspect of the game, but today, my legs feel like they’re covered in barbed wire and my left arm — as a result of a less than gracious fall while running from home plate to first base — is in excruciating pain. One of my colleagues suggested that the reason is because I’m not in shape. “Ugh! Please!” I informed him. “I go to the gym all the time.” He argued that riding th elliptical machine for 30 minutes is not the same kind of workout as running in spurts across an outfield. While I find his assumption ludicrous, it does make me wonder: Was I stronger and in better shape at 13 than I am now at 26?

It’s Hulu time

Safety first

A new ad-supported online video site will be unveiled to the public Wednesday. Hulu.com is equipped with free, full-length television and feature films, however, to see them, you have to make it through the ads. I think it would be better to just stick to the broadcasting sites like ABC and FOX to watch full-length television episodes, but with the movies on there, it still might be something to check out.
I like to think of myself as pretty self-sufficient when it comes to Mimi — my Mini Cooper. If her tires go flat or her wiper fluid gets low, I always know what to do. However, if her battery ever went dead, I would be lost. Luckily, earlier today I found this. Something that will keep both Mimi and myself in good shape. The kit comes with simple instructions on how to jump start a battery, as well as how to change a tire and an accident record sheet, which will remind me of all the important information I need to collect in the event of an accident. In addition, the kit is filled with fun stuff such as aromatherapy headache medicine, breath fresheners and most importantly, chocolate. It’s a must-have for any motoring mademoiselle.

Nothing to do … or so I thought

Moving from Big D (Dallas for those who aren’t familiar with the nickname) was quite a culture shock for me. I’m by no means a go-out-every-night type of gal, however, the transition from the big city to a small town was an adjustment because I was accustom to having something always going on, and Nacogdoches didn’t seem to have that. Well, about an hour ago, after starting what will be a very long events calendar for our April issue, I realize I was wrong, dead wrong. Perhaps it’s because it’s spring, or maybe last month I just didn’t look at all the right venues, but I can assure you that next month no one should have any problems finding exciting events in Nacogdoches.

It pays to be Britney’s dad

My friends who have kids — though they’re few and far between — often say that the joy of having children is unsurpassed, and parenthood can often be full of surprises. Well, I bet they never guessed that this could be one of them.It appears Britney Spears’ dad, James Spears, is getting paid for fatherhood. The Associated Press reports that Spears will receive $2,500 per week from his daughter’s estate. Craziness.

Bye bye Brett

It appears Brett Favre — the handsome and talented Green Bay Packers quarterback — is retiring. “I know I can still play, but it’s like I told my wife, I’m just tired mentally. I’m just tired,” he told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen in a voice mail message. I haven’t kept up with the Packers that much, but I’ve followed them enough to know that he’s been with the team for some time. So, who’s going to fill those shoes?

Martinis with a little extra

The simple instructions made famous by 007 no longer hold up at typical American bars. Now, instead of simply deciding between shaken or stirred martinis, you have the option to change the alcohol, mixer and even garnish of the drink. A prime example of this notion, are the Lolito Martini Glasses. These hand-painted martini glasses feature martini-inspired designs, accompanied by the actual recipe on the bottom of the glass. They’re great. Here’s a few of my favorites.

Lipstick Martini

2 parts Vodka

1 and a half parts Rasberry Liquor

1 part Creme de Cacoa

1 part Creme

Red Panty Martini

1 and a half parts Vodka

One half parts Black Rasberry liquor

one half part rasberry puree

dash of heavy cream

top with whipped cream and a cherry

Return of Addison

As a huge Grey’s Anatomy fan, I was so stoked to read that Dr. Addison Montgomery —aka actress Kate Walsh would be returning this spring to Grey’s Anatomy. While the hit TV show will begin its five new episodes of the season, beginning April 24, Walsh’s main gig Private Practice — another favorite will not, leaving her plenty of time to return to Seattle Grace Hospital.
