E3 is here, and I’m not there

First, the PlayStation 3 will debut in the U.S. on November 17, 2006, with a price tag of $499 and $599, depending on the model you choose. The former has a 20gb hard drive, while the latter has a 60gb hard drive. The high price tag probably has a lot to do with the ability to play Blu-Ray DVDs out of the box.

Another surprise from the Sony camp, other than that half-a-grand price tag was the announcement its controllers will have built-in motion-sensing technology. Something that Nintendo announced last year at the Tokyo Game Show for its upcoming Wii gaming console.

e3logo.jpgDuring the Sony conference, one of the developers of a game was shown on stage playing a demo using the motion technology to control a flying vehicle. Then the developer said that was the kind of thing he was hoping for with the PS3. But I bet you that behind closed doors last year Sony panicked and did what it could to “emulate” Nintendo. Moving on…

The Nintendo press conference stole the show as it usually does at the annual event. The highlight was the on-stage demo of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess being played on the Wii. It was then announced the game will launch with a Gamecube and Wii version on the same day, which happens to be the Wii launch date. However, no specific date was announced other than Q4 of 2006.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl will no longer be a launch title, but to make up for it, Nintendo may try to add online functionality and new characters, with one being Solid Snake from the Metal Gear franchise by Konami. Nintendo also suggested the possibility of other 3rd-party character starring. Sonic, anyone?

It sure seems that Nintendo has stolen the show this year, as was to be expected.

Also during the conference, many other games were announced or shown, with a list of in-development titles available here. Gamecube line-up is here, and the DS line-up can be found at this link.

Other systems, like the PSP, PS2 and Xbox 360, have so many games coming out, I couldn’t find a single release list for each system — instead it’s listed by developer. Check out the individual sites IGN has for each system: PS2, PSP, Xbox360.
