Teen sex: Comics and critique

News that Batwoman is now a lesbian is sure to antagonize the religious right and titillate fans of the genre, both male and female. Let’s face it, comic book artists were years ahead of Photoshop aficionados when it comes to making the human form impossibly perfect — and now that super-hot heroine is into girls. It’s a stroke of marketing genius. Comic books were also years ahead of the curve when it comes to homosexual characters (I’m looking at you, Batman and Robin…). OK, that last point is up for debate, but it is nice to have a homosexual hero who only keeps her secret identity in the closet. Since we’re on the subject of pop-culture sexuality, this essay on teen sex comedies of the ’80s is fascinating in a “Hey, I’m reading about ‘Porky’s,’ and yet I feel smart” kind of way.
