Herbal soap seminar

The SFA Mast Arboretum will begin its 2007 garden seminar series with “Gifts from the Garden,” a soap-making workshop, from 9 a.m. until noon Jan. 13 in the Agriculture Building Room 118 on Wilson Drive.

Zaina Farrar, an experienced soap maker, will lead the demonstration. Participants will create a variety of herbal soaps, learn recipes and techniques of soap making and take home samples of luxurious soap they make themselves.

“The soap will be made from coconut and palm kernel oil, lye, essential oils, and dried herbs,” Farrar said. “I will teach the step-by-step process of cold-process soap making, so attendees can make soap at home on their own.”

Farrar is a senior forest recreation management major at SFA and is a member of the National Association for Interpretation and the Society of American Foresters.

Cost for the seminar is $25 for SFA Mast Arboretum and Pineywoods Native Plant Center Members and $35 for non-members. For more information, contact the education office at (936) 468-1832 or e-mail erodewald@sfasu.edu.
