Ladies you’ll want to read this
![]() | I found this site a few years ago, but recently came across it again, and wanted to share its fabulousness with all our female readers. Don’t date him girl is a Web site for women to check out potential boyfriends before becoming involved. The site works like this, similar to MySpace and Facebook, women post blog type posts on their profile, which is visible to other members, as well as people who are not members. However, you must be a member to post comments on the profiles. While some blogs mention particular men, others simply refer to general scenarios and incidents with current or former boyfriends. In light of Valentine’s Day, ladies, it’s a necessity to go check it out. You don’t want to find out that your V-day date is a commitmentphobic. |

| Classical music can be a good accompaniment to many things — bubble baths, sleeping and, for me, headaches. While I typically only listen to classical music in the comfort of my own home, I have found that listening to it in a concert-type-hall setting exemplifies the sound of the musical notes. This Sunday, Rosemary Swetland, an adjuct faculty member of Angelina College’s Fine Arts Division, will perform in public for the first time at Temple Theater. She will perform compositions from a variety of different periods, including, baroque, romantic and contemporary on the piano. She will be accompanied by fellow faculty members, Charlotte Davis and Larry Greer, as well as, one of her own students, Jaime Heredia. It should be a good performance, and the best part about it — it’s free. Here are the details. | ![]() |

Carried away
| Oh! Only four more months until Carrie Bradshaw hits the silver screen. The Sex and the City Movie is expected to be released on May 30, and I can only imagine how fabulous it will be. The adaptation of the hit HBO series is being directed by the same man who produced the original series, which is based off of Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City novel. With him in the driver’s seat, we can be sure, the movie will live up to the series. Let the countdown begin. |

A Buzz Girl’s weekend hot spot
![]() | The greatest thing about East Texas is that there is always something going on. It may not be close, as many people argue that East Texas begins as far north as Paris and ends as far south as Beaumont — a distance of 295 miles. But, there is always something happening in the region, it’s just a matter of getting to it. Take for instance tomorrow night. Adam Miller, a legendary folksinger, storyteller and autoharp virtuoso will be performing at 8 p.m. at the Camp Street Cafe & Store in Crockett. Miller’s performance will include a collection of regional folksongs that were collected in Houston County (where Crockett is) during the 1930s. It’s almost like a musical history lesson of the area. So, go ahead — take a drive. |

Play me some Mozart
Well it appears that pianists from around the world will be congregating right here in East Texas this weekend. The SFA school of Music will be hosting the George and Peggy Schmidbauer Competition all day Saturday and Sunday on the SFA campus. Forty applicants from across the world will be performing for the grand prize of $5,000 for the senior division and $1,000 for junior division. Really makes me wish I could play. Saturday’s event will include performances by 10 senior semi-finalists, 19-27 year-olds, from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the W.M. Turner Auditorium. Ten junior semi-finalists, 15-18 year-olds, will perform from 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Cole Concert Hall. There is no admission charge and the performances are open to the public. However, later that evening, music lovers will have to forgo $10 to see the final rounds, which begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the junior division and the next day for the senior division. They perform at 2:30 p.m. in the W.M. Auditorium. Check it out.

It’s Oscar time
![]() | Bright and early this morning, well before I was awake, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis and Oscar winner Kathy Bates announced the nominations for the 80th Annual Academy Awards. Johnny Depp, who did an amazing job in his performance as Sweeney Todd, was nominated for best actor. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was nominated for best supporting actor for his performance in Charlie Wilson’s War. Juno, which I haven’t seen yet but looks like a great movie, was nominated in several categories, including, best picture, best original screenplay, best director, Jason Reitman and best actress, Ellen Page. Here’s a complete list of the nominees. |

“The Bear Went Over the Mountain,” a compilation of autobiographical writings by SFA professor Charles Jones and Vietnamese artist Dinh Viet Luc, went on display Sunday at the Museum of East Texas in Lufkin. In addition to large drawings by Luc, the exhibit contains the hand-stitched, leather-bound book and its prints. The exhibit will be shown through Feb. 1. The two men were born on opposite sides of the world, however their mirrored lives of rural upbringing, soldiering in the Vietnam War and becoming printmakers and teachers, is shared in this dual-language book. I’m not much on war history, but it sounds kind of interesting. Check it out.

Britney obituary … what?
![]() | Us Magazine is reporting that the Associated Press has begun preparing Britney Spears’ obituary. OMG! Craziness.
“We are not wishing it, but if Britney passed away, it’s easily one of the biggest stories in a long time,” AP entertainment editor Jesse Washington told the magazine. For real? Being in media, I realize, occasionally, major news organizations will prepare obits for elderly celebrities and politicians, but someone who’s 26? Come on. Who does that? The Associated Press, apparently. |

The truth about Texans
If you’re a Texan, or, at least, consider yourself a native of the Lone Star State, you will love this. Take a look.
11. You know cowpies are not made of beef.
12. Someone you know has used a football or hunting schedule to plan their wedding date.
13. You have known someone who has had a belt buckle bigger than your fist.
14. You aren’t surprised to find movie rental, ammunition, bait, and pregnancy tests all in the same store.
15. Your “place at the lake” has wheels under it.
16. A Mercedes Benz is not a status symbol; a Ford 150 is.
17. You know everything goes better with Ranch dressin’.
18. You learned how to shoot a gun before you learned how to multiply.
19. You actually understand this and you are “fixin’ to” send it to your friends.
20. Finally, you are 100% Texan if you have ever heard this conversation: “You wanna coke?” “Yeah.” “What kind?” “Dr. Pepper!”

America got an inside look at some of Philadelphia’s most interesting characters last night on the season premiere of American Idol. My personal favorite was the Paula Abdul stalker. Take a look.
Kraziness with a capital K. The show continues at 8 p.m. tonight with the Dallas auditions. But, being a native of Big D. I have high expectations for my hometown folks and don’t expect to see quite as many weirdos.

Grey’s Anatomy is back - gasp - but only for the night. According to greysanatomyinsider.com, “Lay Your Hands on Me,” which will premiere at 8 p.m. tomorrow night on ABC, is the last episode of the season. Such a tragedy. But, with the writer’s strike still underway, I can’t help but worry which of my favorite shows is next.

For our last issue, I had the privilege of speaking with Guy and Pipp Gillette, the co-owners of the Camp Street Cafe and Store in Crockett. They’re amazing musicians, but not only because of their cowboy, folk-style, but also because of the way they select performers for their venue. This Saturday, Jed Marum, Mason Brown and special guest Hugh Morrison will grace the stage. After hearing a demo CD of Marum’s music, I think they will be quite a show. Each track on Marum’s demo has that unique folk style that makes me want to sit out on the front porch of a ranch with a pot of coffee and view the open range. Go check them out — here’s the 411.

I’m a huge fan of the arts. Whether it’s musical, written or visual, I’m all about it. But, since picking up a paintbrush last week, I have found a new appreciation for visual artists, e.g. painters, sculptors. My first attempt at painting turned out to be less than fabulous ( I had no idea oil paints took so long to dry and my coffee pot is comprised of a hideous collage of brown, gold and gray). But, while my artistry skills are still in their amateur stage, East Texas is home to many talented painters and the First Street Arts Center wants to find them. Here’s the 411.

Journey back to the 1940s

The 1940s were such a great era — the long pencil skirts, Rosie the riveter and, of course, the big band style of music. Well, the pencil skirts and Rosie are pretty much out, however big band music is making a comeback this Saturday at the Crockett Civic Center. Here’s the 411. Heartbreaker

Well, it’s official; the Cowboys’ season is over. There I was last night, squeezing the life out of the throw pillow on my bed, with my eyes glued to the TV. The score was 21-17, but the Cowboys had possession of the ball and actually had a shot at winning. But as anyone who watched or read this morning’s paper knows, that was far from what happened. Ugh! It was torture for me to watch those last two minutes, particularly Romo’s last throw, which was intercepted by the Giants, and cost the the Cowboys a trip to the NFC Championship game. The Associated Press reported that last night’s loss was the first time a No.1 seed in NFC lost in this round since the NFL went to a 12-team playoff format in 1990. Why did it have to be the Cowboys? Some say it has to do with Romo’s recent flame, Jessica Simpson, but come on, I think not. Simpson, a Dallas native, may have made headlines for her appearance at the Dec. 16 against Philadelphia, but what many people may not be aware of is that she appeared at a couple of games prior to that. Her appearance didn’t seem to affect Romo’s performance then. Most recently, Romo gained negative attention from critics for his recent trip with Jessica to Mexico, but the truth is, it wasn’t Jessica’s presence that broke the hearts of Cowboys fans, it was all Romo himself. Saturday What is it about sushi?
The idea of eating sushi at Wal-Mart was a little bit out there, but after recently trying it, I have to say, it’s pretty good. While I’ll probably only stick with the sushi rolls at Wal-Mart, I do plan to upgrade my typical sushi order this weekend to include sashimi, the real stuff. Hopefully, like my other sushi experiences, it will be a positive one.

Sushi by far is one of the best foods ever made. When I was in college, I often thought my friends were crazy when they told me they wanted me to try raw fish. “Ugh!” I would think to myself. “That is so disgusting.” Putting raw fish in my mouth was just too much to stomach. But, eventually I gave in, starting slowly with California rolls (avocado, cucumber and imitation crab stick), and then moving onto the other rolls that contained raw fish. Spicy tuna is now my official favorite. While there are not a plethora of sushi options in Nacogdoches — Sushi Ya is the only one I can think of off the top of my head — Wal-Mart somewhat recently added a sushi counter, giving me quick and easy access to what is now one of my favorite foods. Initially, I have to admit, I was skeptical. Grey’s is back, but not for long
