Public opinion of Prince Harry
| Looking at the headlines of The Daily Telegraph — a national newspaper in the UK — it’s apparent that the public opinion of Prince Harry may be changing. While the once party-loving prince may have garnered a reputation as a playboy prior to his trip to serve on the front lines of Afghanistan, racking up high bills at swanky nightclubs and bars, his determination to return to the front lines shows a new side to the 23-year-old and it seems the public is taking notice. | ![]() |

The voice of the California raisins
| When one of my colleague’s brought to my attention that Buddy Miles had passed away, I initially thought Buddy who? The fact that Miles had worked alongside Jimi Hendrix was fascinating, but not really enough to hold my interest. It wasn’t until, I discovered that Miles had been the voice of the California Raisins, that I became interested enough to read his obituary. Check him out. |

Rock and roller who?
I’m no music aficionado, but shouldn’t I have at least heard of someone if they’re inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This year, out of the seven artists who will be inducted on March 10, I know only two — Madonna and John Mellencamp. Here’s the others. Maybe you’ve heard of them.
• Leanard Cohen
• The Dave Clark Five
•Kenny Gamble
• Leon Huff
• The Ventures
• Little Walker

If you’re looking to find something to do tonight, might I point you in the direction of Millard’s Crossing. Home to the PineKnot Music Co-op, this venue, will be in full swing with an array of local talent this evening. Ever heard of the Old 97’s — for those of us echo boomers, think Jennifer Aniston’s concert scene in the “The Breakup.” Bassist Murry Hammond will be performing, as will Lufkin’s own Social Bliss. So get up off the couch and head for the car. I’ll be waiting.

For all the men who haven’t made their Valentine’s Day plans, you might want to check this out. The romantic evening begins at 7 p.m., with the train departing from the Rusk station. Alcohol is not provided, but couples can bring one bottle of wine onto the train. Earlier this week the South by Southwest festival released the names of 114 feature films that will be at the annual event’s film festival and the 1,500 artists that will be performing at the music festival. Here are some of the people we’ll be looking for. James Petralli of White Denim, who you may remember from jam sessions at Rita’s back in the day. Rolling Stone recently named White Denim as a breaking artist to look for, and from hearing a sample of their music, we can see why. Also, we’re not going to want miss the world premiere of “Cook County.” The film is about an abused, alienated teenager who returns to his home to discover a household of crystal meth addicts, and it is set right here in the PIney Woods of East Texas. Can’t wait.

Waxing
This past weekend, I tried something new — at-home waxing. I often opt for the professional waxing, and occasionally threading of my eyebrows, but in an attempt to save some cash, I decided to try it on my own. And let me tell you, it was a catastrophe, to say the least. When I was reading the side of the box, it seemed pretty simple. Heat the wax in the microwave, put it on and pull it off. What went wrong, you ask? Everything. First off, the wax wouln’t heat up in the microwave. Then, once it got hot enough and actually looked like the guey mess it was supposed to, the spatula got stuck to the bottom of the jar. Then, I finally got the spatula free from the wax, and proceeded to place it on my eyebrows. The kit I purchased, apparently did not come with any pieces of cloth, and instead, instructed me to pull the wax off by itself. You can imagine how that went. Needless to say, after this experience, it is obvious that I should leave the sticky stuff to the professionals Live music
Girls next door
If you watch E! TV, then you’ve probably witnessed the Girls Next Door — aka Hugh Hefner’s three girlfriends. Not only have these vivacious vixens infiltrated cable television, but now, they offer a range of Playboy videos on everything from friendly advice to workout tips. Take a look! Million dollar babies

Today, while surfing the web, I came across this story. It appears JLo is the latest A-list celebrity to strike a deal with a national media company for photos of her soon-to-arrive twins — a deal somewhere between $4 and $6 million , I might add. This is ridiculous! How did Hollywood get to this point? I don’t recall ever hearing of Judy Garland or Grace Kelly selling pictures of their children for publicity. I can’t believe it. We want to hear from you. Halo tourney in Nacogdoches

The deadline is quickly approaching for entrance into the East Texas Halo tournament scheduled for March 8 at Hero Connection in Nacogdoches. Event organizers said registration is through March 6 at at Hero Connection or Gamestop in Nacogdoches. The tournament’s grand prize winner will walk away with somewhere between $600 - $700. Makes me wish that I played, but the closest I’ve been to Halo is as a spectator on a couch. Check the March issue of Buzz for more details on the event. Mane attraction

Ellen Trout Zoo has a new addition to its family. Mashaka, a year-and-a-half old male lion, recently made the Lufkin zoo its new residence. An African lion who made his way to East Texas via Waco, Mashaka looks like a playful animal, but more than likely, I won’t be getting close enough to find out. But if you have some free time this weekend go check him out, along with the two new Blackbuck Antelopes that arrived at the zoo a few weeks ago. Clinton comes to town
What not to give this V-day
You’ve got one day left. Have no idea what to buy her? The experts at Gift Girl have some very important don’ts to keep in mind when trying to select that perfect gift. Follow these guidelines so you don’t end up sleeping on the couch.
Your memory machine

It was a time of flannel shirts and combat boots, alternative grunge music and teen dramas. Retro Junk is a dream come true for people who want to reconnect with the greatest decade — the 1990s. Remember Seth Green before “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “The Italian Job?” Or, what about Johnny Depp prior to “Pirates of the Caribbean?” Retro Junk is packed with commericals and movie trailers from the ’70s, ’80s and ‘90. So bust out a fruit roll up or two and let the memory machine do its thing. Countdown to V-day
To kiss or kiss encore? That is the question.

In Texas, when it comes to kissing, there are typically two options — the quick peck or the full-on tonsil hockey. However, Gilles Debunne, recently brought up an interesting point about kissing in France through his Web site combien de bises. In France, where kisses are given in place of the good ‘ole handshake, it appears two is the likely number of kisses you’ll receive. But, apparently the number varies. Here’s the 411. Texas goodies

Texas wine has a personality all its own. I don’t often drink it — mainly because I’m more drawn to cabernet and merlot. But, on occasion I’ll venture outside my comfort zone, and dive into a glass of shiraz. In general, though, it’s safe-to-say that when it comes to wine selection, I’m a conservative. Recently, I came across a list of 10 Texas wines that opened up my eyes up to the possibility of adding a little variety to my vino. Here they are. The stars at night …

If you only have time to do one thing this weekend, it should be seeing Forever Falls at the Backdoor Saturday night. This Beaumont band has an interesting sound that is slighly reminiscent of the grunge bands of the early 1990s. The band, made up of Adam, lead vocals; Derek, drums; Matt, guitar; and Danny, formed in March 2006 and released their debut album that following December. Recently, they released their second album “Bigger than you are,” which has a couple tracks with some unusual lyrics. If you go see them, be sure to listen to the lyrics of “Movies.” They’re great. The band will be performing at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Backdoor in Nacogdoches. See you there.
