On the road again
This weekend I’m packing my bags and heading to Galveston. It’s going to be great. And, if you’re like me, and want to get away but stay relatively close, here are a few places I suggest.
• Woodville — There are two museums here that I thought sounded intriguing, Heritage Village and Allan Shivers Library and Museum. If you go to Heritage Village, be sure to check out the Pickett House Restaurant, which serves up an array of homemade favorites. If you’re in the mood for the festival scene, look no further than this cozy, East Texas town. This weekend the annual dogwood festival is going on.
•Crockett — Porterdavis will be playing Saturday at the Camp Street Cafe and Store. The Austin-based band is a blues/ roots trio that — from hearing a sample of their music on MySpace — should not be missed. The Warfield House and Quilt Center looks to be a great place to stay if you decide to go down. The bed and breakfast is near downtown, and even has a pool.
• Jefferson — One day I will visit here, because this place seems too amazing to pass up. Not only is it home to the “Gone With the Wind” museum, but it also has a wide array of historic hotels such as The Exclesior House and The Jefferson Hotel.
