Old professors

Like many other media outlets across the state, here at Buzz, we are constantly honing our skills with industry professionals. Tuesday, I had the opportunity to do just that with one of my old professors from the University of North Texas. While, he may not have remembered me, I clearly recalled Dr. Getschow. His intense tone and comments during my school newspaper’s critique sessions “Slash” were recreated in an afternoon workshop on self-editing. Listening to him speak, I was reminded of all the things I learned in school, but have sort of thrown out the window, along with my social life. With any luck, this time they’ll stick with me, and be evident in our next issue. So, be on the lookout.

Let’s wrestle

When a colleague of mine, Jeff Awtrey, approached me earlier this week about whether I would be attending Lufkin’s Downtown Hoedown on April 19, my initial response was, “Hmm, I don’t think so.” But then Jeff said the Southwest Premier Wrestling show would there, and he would be working as a timekeeper. Wrestling at a hoedown? This is intriguing.
The downtown festival will be host to several other events, including a petting zoo and a civil war reenactment, but the wrestling matches at noon in front of the downtown courthouse and 7 p.m. at the Lufkin National Guard will certainly be a highlight of the day— at least for me. While I don’t really follow wrestling all that much, I do recall the days of watching Hulk Hogan as a little girl, and being mesmerized by the raw nature of the sport. I can’t wait to be able to see that again live.

Kilgore film festival

Julian Schnabel’s “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”— a film that takes audiences inside the world of French journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby — has been hailed by several critics as an exceptional film. New York Times film critic A.O Scott wrote in his review,
“… (Schnabel) demonstrates his own imaginative freedom in every frame and sequence, dispensing with narrative and expository conventions in favor of a wild, intuitive honesty.”

“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” is just one of six acclaimed films that will be shown this month at the 2008 Kilgore Spring Film Festival. The festival kicks off at 6:30 p.m. April 16 with a wine and cheese reception in the lobby of 4 Star Cinema, followed by a screening of “The Savages,” which stars Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The films will run at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. nightly through May 8. Additional matinee shows will run at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Here’s the lineup.

• The Savages April 16-19

• The Diving Bell and the Butterfly April 20-22

• Persepolis April 23-26

• In Bruges April 27-29

• Mrs. Pettigrew Lives for a Day April 30 - May 3

• The Counterfeiters May 4 - 8

Texas Nationals to open Saturday

Truth be told, I’d never heard of Texas National before I moved here. But, now, it seems wherever I go, Dallas, Galveston or Houston, someone immediately connects the event to Nacogdoches. This year, more than 350 artists living and working in the U.S. entered the national art competition. The winners will be announced Saturday by renowned artist Roger Shimomura at The Art Center @ the Old Opera House. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a slide lecture on his work, some of which will be displayed upstairs in a special exhibit. What I found great about the few pieces that I have seen, is how intricate they are. They contain so much detail. So if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, I highly recommend you stop by the Old Opera House.

A preganant man?

Yes it’s true. But, not exactly how you think. When I first heard the report that Thomas Beatie was pregnant, I didn’t know what to think. Could this be possible? But, as I later found out through various reports on Good Morning America and Oprah, Beatie was once a woman. While he did take testosterone to look and sound more masculine, he elected to keep his female organs. Through artifical insemination, which was conducted at home by his wife, Beatie became a pregnant man. The wonders of technology continue to amaze me. This Absolut World is now an Absolut Reality.

Has the iPhone met its match?

Reading about the Samsung Instinct today, which has the two things that I have been waiting for in the Apple iPhone — 3-G access, so downloads and web browsing are twice as fast and a replaceable battery — I couldn’t help but think about the future products of companies such as Sprint — where shoppers will be able to find the Instinct — T-Mobile and Verizon. As a self-described Apple addict, I would most likely pick the iPhone over any other touch screen phone. However, I can’t help but wonder if a superior product is just over the horizon.
